Why your Community/Organization needs Drumming and Wellness!!!

In our rapidly changing world, maintaining wellness is more crucial than ever. The World Health Organization defines wellness as the “optimal state of health of individuals and groups,” with a focus on realizing one's fullest potential—physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually, and economically. It also emphasizes the importance of fulfilling roles in our families, communities, workplaces, and beyond. At our cultural arts studio, 22StarvingArtist, we believe that creativity is a vital component of wellness, acting as a bridge that connects our inner and outer worlds, helping us navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace.

 The Healing Power of Drumming

Drumming is more than just a musical activity—it’s a powerful tool for healing and connection. With roots in African culture, drumming has traditionally been used to communicate, celebrate, and heal. Modern research supports its benefits, showing that drumming can reduce stress, improve mood, and even boost the immune system. For example, a 2021 study published in *PLOS ONE* found that participating in group drumming sessions significantly reduced anxiety and depression while increasing social resilience and a sense of community among participants. Our community drum circles provide a space where individuals can connect, release emotions, and experience the joy of rhythm. This collective energy not only uplifts the individual but also strengthens the bonds within the community. Learn more about our drum programs here.

Creativity as a Core Component of Resilience

Creativity acts like glue, fusing together the various parts of our wisdom and knowledge. It’s the water that connects all boats in the lake of our shared human experience. Whether we are fixing, forging, creating, destroying, building, or healing, creativity is at the heart of resilience. Recent studies have shown that engaging in creative activities can significantly improve mental health and well-being. A 2022 study published in *The Journal of Positive Psychology* found that individuals who regularly engage in creative activities experience higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction, even when controlling for other factors like income and education. Creativity often emerges after great hardship, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. It’s a language we all have access to, even if we don’t always feel connected to it.

For some, creativity is a constant companion, though they may not realize its power. For others, it’s a force that only emerges in times of crisis. But creativity isn’t just for moments of chaos—it’s a resource we can tap into at any time to enrich our lives and our communities. As Albert Einstein said, “Play is valuable research.” Those who embrace creativity are better equipped to rise above adversity, using their imagination to set the stage for success.

The Impact of Creativity on Communities

When creativity is embraced at a community level, the effects can be profound. A report by the *National Endowment for the Arts* in 2020 highlighted how arts-based community programs have led to decreased crime rates, improved social cohesion, and increased economic opportunities in underserved areas. In addition, a study conducted by *University College London* in 2023 found that communities with higher engagement in creative activities also reported lower levels of social isolation and better overall mental health outcomes. These findings underscore the transformative potential of creativity in fostering healthier, more resilient communities.

Coping and Creating with Change

Each of us has access to creativity; we just need to remember how to connect to it. Once the door is open, creativity flows naturally. Here are a few tips to help you make that connection:

- Break Free: When faced with a challenge, think outside the box. Break the mold and approach the situation in a wild or unexpected way.

- Switch it up or integrate: Don’t be afraid to try something new. Cross-pollinate your comfortable ideas with something edgy or unfamiliar.

- Flip your focus: Look for inspiration in the opposite of what you’re focused on. The five elements teach us that opposites support movement and change.

- Do Something: Creativity is about the process, not the product. Engage in activities like painting, dancing, or writing—any “-ing” that allows you to express yourself.

Integrating Wellness: Beyond Creativity

Our studio’s approach to wellness goes beyond creativity. We offer personalized yin yoga sessions both online, and in person to help people connect with their bodies, reduce stress, and cultivate inner peace. Our holistic health coaching provides personalized guidance on nutrition, mindfulness, and self-care. We also offer products like herbal tea blends and fresh-pressed tonic shots, designed to support common health concerns and promote overall well-being. These offerings are particularly important in our community, where access to healthy food and healthcare is limited.

Why We Need Community Support:

Our vision extends beyond our studio walls. We aim to partner with local schools, corporations, museums, and community leaders to make creativity and wellness accessible to everyone in our city. However, we can’t do it alone. We need the support of those who share our belief in the power of community enrichment. By working together, we can bring hope, health, and healing to our city, one drumbeat, one painting, and one cup of herbal tea at a time.

Conclusion:

The challenges facing our community are significant, but they are not insurmountable. By embracing creativity and wellness, we can empower individuals, strengthen our community, and create a brighter future for all. We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you’re an individual looking for a way to de-stress, a corporation interested in team-building, or a community leader ready to make a difference, we welcome you to be part of the change.
